The concept of Social Justice is complicated. This workbook is not trying to simplify the concept but to provide the language to describe the abstract ideas that surround and encompass Social Justice. After all, words matter. The goal here is not to fulfill a politically correct agenda, but to provide a common language to enhance understanding.This workbook is a companion to a survey course. It is not in and of itself a deep dive into all that the concept of Social Justice entails, but rather a tool for people to wet their feet with basic understanding and insight so that they may discover aspects of Social Justice that interest them the most.The basic premise that drives this workbook is that governments, organizations, and institutions are systems that need careful monitoring by an informed citizenry to not only prevent corruption and injustice, but to hopefully entrench a long-term a practical framework that embraces Social Justice as a prescribed foundation.It is important to understand what human rights are so that they can be protected. It is also important to understand that human rights are violated not only by other people, but by societal systems. Effecting meaningful changes to systems requires thoughtful, educated, like-minded people making a commitment to do better. Neither humans nor systems will ever be perfect, but with conscientious effort and education, change is possible.This workbook is to help people start a journey of understanding and awareness. Social Justice is progress, not perfection. In the end, Social Justice is the commitment of people to a more compassionate, brave, and truthful society.
