To survive he sets off and joins the army of Joshua, heir of Moses, and the general ordered by God to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. This is a world where everyone believes God controls everything, from a good harvest to an upset stomach. But which God? The Israelites go for Yahweh with all his funny rules and commandments. Their enemies prefer Baal, a bit more easy-going but he likes child sacrificeInto this world of determined generals, cynical priests and self-serving courtiers comes the penniless Ehud. Pretty much able to turn his hand to anything from altar boy to duel-to-the- death he retains a sardonic view and speaks with compelling honesty. He always tell us as it is. Sometimes pretty, more often not, his version is not the cardboard cut-out story of heroes versus villains, all spears, sandals and fringed togas. There is no "Thou" and "Thee- Ing" here before the Walls of Jericho, and no one "rends their garments". They swear, they scream, they cheat, they get drunk, they whore, they cry for their mothers - as soldiers always have. And, of course, they triumph, and those walls come "atumblin' down".
