Excess facilities :DOD needs more complete information and a strategy to guide its future disposal efforts : report to congressional committees.

GAO has designated the Departmentof Defense's (DOD) management ofsupport infrastructure as a high riskarea, in part because of challenges inreducing excess infrastructure.Operating and maintaining excessfacilities consumes resources thatcould be eliminated from DOD'sbudget or used for other purposes. Inresponse to direction in House Report111-491, GAO reviewed DOD's(1) progress toward meeting demolitionprogram targets for fiscal years 2008through 2013; (2) facility utilizationinformation-a source for identifyingadditional excess facilities; and(3) plans for managing and disposingof excess facilities after fiscal year2013. GAO analyzed information onexcess facilities, completeddemolitions, and underutilized facilitiesin DOD's real property inventorydatabase; reviewed DOD's plans fordemolition after the on-going programends; and conducted site visits toselected military installations.
