Meet the Loftons and the Wades, two sets of brothers growing up in 1980s South Dakota without their parents. The families couldn't be more different! The Wades, headed by abusive oldest brother Carl, have led secretive lives for years, merely existing on the edges of society. The intellectual Carl has educated his brothers and kept them close to home, eschewing public school and contact with the outside world. Recognizing that their way of life can't continue forever, middle brother Brad tries to smooth the way for the youngest, Ramsey, 14, but can't always manage to shield him from their abusive and neglectful older brother. Still, he convinces Carl to let Ramsey attend school for the first time, where his musical and mathematical talents are unleashed. Will this sudden exposure to the wider world open new doors for Ramsey, or signal the beginning of the end for his family's solitary existence? The Loftons, led by oldest brother John, are more recently orphaned. Strict but loving, John has put his own life on hold to care for his four younger brothers: caring and helpful Eddie, tough but protective Cutter, solitary and athletic James, and smart but naïve Jeff. Though they have moments of angst, their love for each other pulls them together. Ramsey and Jeff meet in orchestra and become friends over their shared love of the violin. Will Ramsey's growing friendship with Jeff and the Loftons be enough to save him when his own world crumbles?
