Far From England is an historical novel set in colonial Australia from 1798 to 1824. Lieutenant James Urquhart, a young Scot, joins the New South Wales Army Corps, a regiment posted to colonial Australia from Britain to protect the convict settlement from possible attacks by other nations. One night, James rescues a convict girl heavy with child from the streets of Sydney Town, but she dies in childbirth, and James adopts her son as his own. Growing to manhood, the boy, Cieran, is not aware of the history of his birth, though he takes up the causes of emancipated convicts despite James' disapproval in the class-conscience society. Cieran's courtship of Australian-born Fiona is also fraught with difficulties for the young couple. "Far From England" is a prequel to "Caitlin's Country" and "Finding Fiona." The novel also stands alone as the story of a young man's coming of age in 19th century Australia.
