Acceptance, repression, denial, and rebellion: These are terms commonly used to describe how adults cope with surviving an abusive childhood. They can all prove effective when strategically applied, but often leave victims without closure- an essential part of the healing process. Victims are often taught to "forgive and forget," or to "let bygones be bygones." We're told not to speak of our past, and that we should just "get over it" and move on with our lives. Survivors of child abuse and neglect are often left to struggle through what remains of their lives without assistance or affection, without tolerance or acceptance, and without education or guidance.
