His story starts with how a hailstorm crept up on him while he was in the field, using it as a metaphor for how the climate crisis is creeping up on us, with the devastation afterwards suggesting our future. He argues that all of us, and especially his profession, political science, are failing to respond to the gathering signs of the climate crisis. This is not an easy book to read, since it describes both desperate depression and intense anger, but that is the point: Current efforts are not enough. Meadowlark calls upon us to recognize our desperate reality, and do what must be done to give today's children the future they deserve.
