A native of Los Angeles, California, Carol was born right before the onset of the Great Depression. Following graduation from high school this city girl married Rod (Rodney) Pomeroy, and they moved to a ranch in Lancaster, California. Their son, Hal was born two years later. The following year in 1951, lured by glowing letters describing Alaska's spectacular scenery and opportunities, the couple joined Rod's father and homesteaded on the Kenai Peninsula. Their daughter, Vicki, was born in Seward. Carol, now remarried, wrote of her life in Homer, Alaska in the early 1950s until their return to Los Angeles in 1954. This memoir brings to life the everyday challenges of a modern pioneer living without electricity or running water.
