My 2Nd Chance - : With A New Vision

My name is Dionicio Torres and I am a proud American immigrant. I came to this country with my parents only a year after I was born. This is my home - the place where I strive now each day to live out my American dream - to be the voice for those who, for one reason or another, have been blindsided by one of life's many unexpected challenges. I could call what happened to me a tragedy, but it wasn't. This opening paragraph in my personal story "A Second Chance - With a New Vision" is one story of thousands of stories that, I believe captures the struggles of immigrant teenagers who get caught in a web of finding their place in a world that is so often unwelcoming to immigrants. These youth, therefore create a world of their own - becoming adults long before reaching puberty. Despite this horrible place in which I landed, I was able to find my way out of what felt like a scary and very dark maze. When I made my way out of this dark place I found freedom and a brand-new life with an education, a wife and family. Telling my story was very cathartic for me and I trust that it will be inspirational for others who are traveling the same dark path upon which I found myself. When I was encouraged to write this book, I thought that was an impossible task because I am blind. But I found that with the help of technology that too was possible. After I began dictating my story, one paragraph at time, it gave me a vision for other possibilities that would allow me to be a mentor and encourager for others. My story begins the day someone held a gun to my head and shot me, point blank, in my temple. The reader then travels back with me to my birthplace, Durango, Mexico and the trials my family experienced traveling back and forth across the border. I paint a picture of my life from birth to age sixteen and weave in all those family members and friends who were such an integral part of my life. My second chance to really live my life follows my recuperation of over five surgeries and learning to live as a disabled person, but also shows the power of supportive and loving human beings who would not let me die (literally and figuratively). Now, over 10 years after I was shot, I am a documented immigrant with goals of living a productive life in this country and building a wonderful life for my two children. This is a book written to inspire, motivate and uplift audiences from age 15 - 50 and beyond. This is not just an immigrant story, but a survivor's story.
