Berthe My Mother's Silence is a true story. This is my story: Yvonne, Berthe's sister, is visiting from Florida. She makes a shocking revelation to Berthe, telling her that her mother is not her mother! Berthe does not believe it and looks for clues that could lead her to discover the truth. Then, she learns that she is the child of sin, born out of wedlock in the fifties. This information jostles her and she tries, somehow, to remain calm in all this. She feels betrayed, no longer recognizing her identity. Who is her mother? Why did they hide the truth from her? Who is her father? She feels entitled to explanations since in a moment's time, her life turned upside down. CLARIFICATIONS: In the 1950s, the Catholic religion dictated the conduct of the French Canadians! For example, a young unwed mother was the shame of the family and of society. In this situation, to prevent gossip, the pregnant girl was sent to a remote place, unbeknown from all. Either that or the poor girl was confined to the convent, in the care of the "good sisters," the nuns. For the younger ones at home, for the family and the neighborhood, the father and mother justified the absence of their pregnant daughter by saying that she was studying in town or gone to work in the countryside. They invented all sorts of well-tied lies, beautiful stories to shield the secret and avoid scandal. Nobody knew that the exiled girl had a baby. Some of these children became the "last-born" of the mother, but most of them were adopted. They would perhaps find out about it one day, sometimes twenty, thirty even forty years later. This is what happened to BERTHE, who is one of those children. NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: This is the first book I have written. The autobiographical novel is an expression of my experience, not a therapy I made. As you scroll through the chapters, you will discover that the situations and events I have experienced occurred in my family and in so many others in Quebec, and certainly elsewhere around the world. Of course, if I was born nowadays, it would be otherwise... But at the time of my birth, life was quite different. UPDATE: In Quebec, on June 16, 2018, the implementation of Law 113, restores hope. The seal of confidentiality was lifted on more than 300,000 adoption files - including mine. This law now gives orphans and adopted children born between the 1920s and 1970s the opportunity to find out the identity of their biological parents. This outcome soothes my indignation and pleases my heart, for all those who will assert their legitimate rights to know their genetic origins. All these children who have waited so long... they are now adults who, at last, will get to know their roots. Then, from this information, when possible, they will reunite, if that is the choice of the adoptee and of the biological parents. BERTHE My Mother's Silence is the story of my own adoption. You may choose the paperback version or the Kindle book to read on your computer, your tablet and your cellular phone. It is available in English and in French, under the original title: BERTHE: Le Silence de ma Mère. INVITATION: I invite you to write your testimonials. Tell me your adoption story, either about your own adoption or that of a relative. Are you the son, the daughter, the mother, the father? Is it adoption in Quebec, Canada, between 1920 and 1970? Be assured that I will read each and everyone and that it will remain confidential. Thank you so much for your trust in me. HAPPY READING!
