Melatonin and Periodontal Disease

The insights gleaned from this book underscore the importance of exploring novel therapeutic approaches, such as melatonin supplementation, for the management of periodontal disease. The anti-inflammatory properties of melatonin, attributed primarily to its ability to modulate various inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress pathways implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Moreover, melatonin's antioxidant properties have been shown to counteract the detrimental effects of reactive oxygen species on periodontal tissues, thereby preserving periodontal homeostasis and preventing disease progression.By harnessing the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of melatonin, it is conceivable that the future interventions targeting melatonin pathways may offer new avenues for improving periodontal health and ultimately enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by periodontitis.
