Until Sam Connelly is in his late twenties, he leads a relatively normal life. He grows up, goes to college, falls in love, and gets married. Then, on April 12, 2016, he leaps in front of a moving vehicle to save the life of his wife, Caroline. Although the car miraculously bends around him, Sam still dies of his injuries.
