Above The Storm: New And Selected Poems

When I was a teenager, I was drawn to the power and beauty of poetry. There was a sense of awakening within this inner world of poetic language where words were both descriptive and strikingly vivid. I decided to describe my own life experience in poetic terms and studied the great classical poets such as Robert Frost, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, W.H. Auden, and many others. I read and re-read the passages that caught my imagination or deeply touched me. Each style was distinctive, music played in the rhythm of their words, and wisdom often reflected in the message. It amazed me how emotional intensity could be reflected in such a brief economy of words. The discovery of poetry at an early age allowed me to appreciate life and my connection to the human experience in a way that an awkward teenager would have missed. I became excited about my discovery and convinced that poetry was the purest form of expression. I had entered the inner world of poetic language as a young person and was hooked! This book is about a collective of perceptions forged by my particular life experience. My poetry has always been a grounding force for me as well as a semblance of order. It became my sense of purpose and an explanation for what I was going through...It is a part of my structure from which I derive joy as well as a sense of fulfillment and comfort. This book is my portrayal of what makes us all uniquely human. I am thankful that so many poets have nourished my heart and mind through their words and hope that something in the spirit of my book of poetry will also resonate and speak to you.
